Cold Got You Down?

During colder seasons, nasty flu bugs become active. Sad to say, catching a cold or the flu during the holidays is common. Other viruses such as notavirus (the stomach flu) and rotavirus are active during winter  too. It can be very inconvenient when you have a lot of Christmas shopping to do and parties to attend. The cold virus spreads faster in the colder. Aside from the fact that people are subject to more crowding, it also reproduces faster at lower temperatures. Most probably, everyone is busy shopping at a crowded mall, and exposed to something that is totally unhygienic i.e. using the same doorknobs, banisters and surfaces after wiping their noses or sneezing.

Keep the sneezes at bay and avoid viruses by following these tips:

  • Wash your hands frequently.

You have probably heard this advice countless times from your doctor. Practice frequent hand-washing and proper hygiene. To keep the germs away, wash your hands with soap and water or you could also use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

It is extremely important to wash up especially after using the restroom or being in crowded areas because chances are some of those people are sick without even knowing  it. It is also advisable to wash your hands before preparing food, and eating the scrumptious food at a party.

  • Keep exercising.

No matter how busy you get this holiday season, try to squeeze in an hour or less of exercise . The benefits of exercise are not all in your head. In fact, exercise increases your body’s virus-fighting cells.  Cardiovascular exercise also helps regulate cortisol and it would mean that you will be less prone to stressors that can lead to certain illnesses.  Don’t stay in bed during cold season because a jog around the block can do wonders for your body.
