Pregnancy Questions – Folic Acid or Folate?
Pregnancy can be a time filled with questions. What’s the best prenatal vitamin to take is one of the most common. Many women are confused when it comes to Folic acid and Folate. These terms are often used interchangeably. Some would even argue that folate and folic acid are the same nutrient. Basically, both are vitamin B9 but in different forms.
To start, why is folic acid or folate so important?
Folic acid assists in fetal development. Folic, iron, and calcium are the three essential factors in prenatal wellness. A lack of this vitamin may result in negative effects on the unborn baby’s brain development.
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention says that all women of childbearing age should have at least 400 micrograms of folic acid a day. It is advisable to take folic acid before getting pregnant whether a woman is hoping to conceive or not. Neural tube defects like spina bifida develops in the first 28 days of pregnancy and women should try to prevent this by taking folic acid.
So what’s the difference between folic acid and folate?
Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin which belongs to the B complex family of vitamins. Vitamin B9 is important to our cellular growth and regeneration. It also helps the body perform important functions which includes DNA synthesis and repair, creation of red blood cells, nucleotide biosynthesis in cells, helps prevents anemia, and aids our body breakdown carbohydrates to sugar which is essential for our energy. These vitamins are expelled from our body instead of being stored in our body which is why daily intake of folic acid is important.
You can find Folic acid in green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli, lentils, peas, beets, brussel sprouts, poultry, liver, wheat germ, cereals, beans, breads, nutritional yeast, tuna, cantaloupes, strawberry, and citrus fruits like orange. It is also added to processed food products like cereals.
Vitamin B9 known as folate or folic acid, is an important nutrient that normally occurs as folate. It is soluble in water and B vitamins/folate aids adrenal function, maintains a good nervous system, and is important for metabolic processes.
